Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector

This qualification satisfies the government requirement for all teachers, tutors and trainers to hold an initial teaching award.

It is suitable for those who want to be a teacher, tutor or trainer, or those who need an initial award for their current role as a teacher ,company trainer or even working in an FE College, it is also recommend that those who work within the Adult and Community Learning, Home Office trainers, Armed forces trainer or with a Work Based Learning Provider complete this course.

By the end of the programme, learners will be able to understand the teacher's role and responsibilities have knowledge of different teaching and learning approaches, plan and deliver sessions which motivate learners, use a variety of assessments and keep appropriate records.

Learners will gain knowledge and understanding of the teacher's role and approaches to teaching and learning, plan learning sessions and manage learning. The achievement of the Level 3 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector will confirm that they have shown that they have a good understanding of the essential aspects of the teacher/trainer role, can organise and manage effective learning and have developed professionally through on-going reflection and evaluation

Aim
This award is for those who are or who want to be a teacher, tutor or trainer and need to be able to plan, prepare and implement learning for a specialist area

Objectives
On completion of the one mandatory unit, learners will have demonstrated that they are able to:

  • Understand the teacher's role and legislative requirements
  • Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches
  • Demonstrate session planning skills
  • Deliver and evaluate learning
  • Understand the use of assessment methods and reasons for keeping records of assessment
  • Opportunities for Progression
    On completion of this qualification those enabling learning could:

  • Add further units in order to gain the Level 3 or Level 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, for the associate teacher role
  • Work towards the Level 5 or Level 6 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, for the full teaching role
  • Once they have gained the Level 5 or Level 6 Diploma, undertake continuing professional development in order to be awarded Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS)
  • It is a requirement that all candidates should have an initial assessment on entry to the qualification. This should include an initial assessment of their individual needs in relation to the minimum core of English, Mathematics and ICT. The outcomes of the initial assessment should be recorded in each candidate's individual learning plan

    Teaching Practice and Assessed Observations

  • Candidates should be involved in at least one hour of micro teaching (i.e. teaching others following the programme)
  • The candidate must deliver at least one 15 minute micro teaching session which should be observed and assessed by a member of the delivery team.
  • This micro teaching should be to a group of at least 3 learners and enable the trainee teachers to use some basic methodologies and, where appropriate a degree of differentiation.
  • For the additional 45 minutes candidates can either deliver additional micro teaching sessions (which could be to a group or an individual) or observe the micro teaching sessions of other candidates.
  • Teaching Practice and Assessed Observations
    Where candidates have access to real teaching practice, this can be used to meet the requirements for teaching practice and assessed observations.

    This course is fully resourced with a learner's workbook and assignments.
